Through the years as a school counselor I learned that one of the main ways to help kids deal with bullying is to teach them to be assertive. I always taught the Steps to Respect unit to 3rd-5th graders. This curriculum gives great examples of how to be assertive. I have talked to counselors who do not like the unit, but I loved it and so did the kids. I think it is all in how you teach it and what resources you add to the lessons! If you have any questions about what I did or how I made it more exciting let me know. I am adding a couple links that I have found to be helpful when teaching kids to be assertive! 1. Article-How to raise assertive kids who speak up for themselves and others 2. Steps to Respect Curriculum 3.Assertiveness for Kids-PDF with examples I have put together a few links of sites that give you examples and resources of how to help children cope with disasters, such as tornadoes, hurricanes and other natural disasters.
